The Introduction
The Ministry of Justice has announced that from January 1, 2022, digital nomad (workation) visas will be piloted. The term “workation” is a blend of work and vacation and refers to working remotely while on vacation or in a tourist destination. Workation visas are currently in operation in tourism-oriented countries in Europe, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia. Previously, foreigners in Korea had to either apply for a tourist visa or enter without a visa to stay in the country for 90 days or less, limiting their ability to work remotely. Eligibility Standards for Workation Visa
For employees from foreign companies to qualify for the workation visa, they must have more than a year’s experience in the same industry and have individual income that exceeds double the GNP per capita (approximately KRW 84.96 million as of 2022).
